Sign up to attend this Club if you are into Anime, Manga, or Asian Culture. Once a month we will meet to munch food, discuss manga, and watch/discuss one or more paired anime.

(Sign up and the 12 people who sign up get a free copy of this month's manga selection.)

Following the screening and discussion we will work on drawings and articles to populate our Online Maga-Zine about anime and manga. If your high school sponsors an anime club, we welcome one drawing or photo and one article/haiku/game/puzzle submission per month from outside clubs.

If your submission is accepted, it will be included in the Mangazine. To submit email sholloway@tacomapubliclibrary.org with the subject line "Zine Submission". Please attach your image or article in a .jpg, .pdf, or word format, and list the names of the creator, the title of the piece, and the name of the Manga club. Ages 13-25
-----------------------
This edition of the Anime Club has been expanded to 30 attendees because we are offering a workshop on in-depth character creation for Anime, Manga, or Cos-Play. In our workshop we will get into things like backstory creation, developing character personality, character flaws and pointing out how the killer is in the details. We'll have some fun acting activities, drawing and writting activities. Then when we have shown you all that we have to show you, you can show off and design your physical character using any medium you would like. From acting it, to writting it, to drawing a panel or two if you're up for it. Don't let your idea's stay trapped in your mind let them loose with people and let your imagination come to life!

In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, the Tacoma Public Library welcomes classical guitarist James Manuele for a concert of Spanish, Mexican and Latin American music from three centuries.

James Manuele earned his Masters of Music in Guitar Performance at Portland State University, Oregon, under composer and guitarist Bryan Johanson. As a soloist and ensemble performer, James has performed in concert series, music festivals, and concertos with local orchestras throughout the United States,
He presently teaches at both Clark College Vancouver, Washington and at Concordia in Portland, Oregon.
James Manuele's repertoire ranges from Baroque music, such as Bach's Cello Suites, to contemporary composers, such as Bryan Johanson and Enrique Granados. Author of Struck by Genius How a Brain Injury Made Me a Mathematical Marvel
No one else sees the world the way Jason Padgett does. Water pours from the faucet in crystalline patterns, numbers call to mind distinct geometric shapes, and intricate fractal patterns emerge from the leaves and branches of trees, revealing the intrinsic mathematical designs hidden in the objects around us.

Amazingly, Jason wasn't born this way. Twelve years ago, he was a party-loving jock and a college dropout who'd never made it past pre-algebra. But a violent mugging permanently and profoundly altered the way his brain works, giving him unique gifts. His ability to understand math and physics skyrocketed. He's now a devoted student and an award-winning artist, hand-drawing the stunning geometric patterns he sees everywhere.

The first documented case of acquired savant syndrome with mathematical synesthesia, Jason is a medical marvel. Some researchers see his transformation as proof that every brain possesses stunning abilities only some people are able to consciously access. Struck by Genius is the remarkable tale of Jason's determined journey to overcome psychological and neurological trauma and embrace his new mind.

Jason describes his inner life and perception of the world before and after the attack with astonishing insight and infectious warmth. His is a story of joy, of falling in love, finding a passion for numbers, and, above all, discovering a deep sense of wonder for the beautiful order in our seemingly chaotic world.
Jason Padgett is an aspiring number theorist and mathematician with acquired savant syndrome and synesthesia. He is currently the manager of three futon stores in Tacoma, Washington. His art, drawings of the grids and fractals he sees synesthetically, won Best International Newcomer at the Artoconecto A-B(o)MB show at the Bakehouse Art Complex in 2008. Struck by Genius is his first book.

This is an amazing YA book that everyone will enjoy. The plot is very detailed and yet understandable. I also like the continuation of characters and plot from the first book Cinder. This is a must read!  Library Catalog

The author talks about her life, the abuse she suffered as a young child and through adulthood. She made poor choices, and blamed God and others for her problems. She did believe in a Supreme Being most of the time but questioned why bad things happened if there was a God.

She had happy times too, but didn't feel she deserved happiness. Even when she had a stable marriage to a good man, and enjoyed her children, she still felt something was missing in her life. Then she died for nine minutes and met God.

I hear about this book after hearing her give an interview on "America's Test Kitchen". There was a lot of good information and writing, expecially if you enjoy a point of view of America from Great Britain. The topics were interesting, and as I read the book right after Michael Pollen's "Cooking", it provided an interesting afterview.

The one drawback was that for a lot of topics, there was a serious amount of jumping around an revisiting history. You'd hear about the same period in Pots as in Knives as in other topics. It did become a bit repetitive. But it did not stop me from enjoying the book.  Library Catalog
